A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is based on the true story of Salva Dut, 1 of the Lost Boys from Sudan during the 2nd Sudanese Ceremonious War in 1985. The volume also includes a separate narrative about a girl named Nya, which takes place in Sudan equally well, simply start in 2008. Throughout the book we learn about Nya and Salva's circumstances and their struggles.Salva's story is harrowing. Information technology's during a normal school mean solar day in 1985 that shots are heard–the state of war has arrived in his hamlet–and he's forced to come across the bush-league for safety.
"Go quickly, all of you lot," the instructor said, his voice low and urgent. "Into the bush. Do you hear me? Not domicile. Don't run home. They will exist going into the villages. Stay away from villages–encounter the bush-league."
He has no idea where he's going; he only knows he must seek safety equally far away from home as possible. Traveling with dissimilar groups of people, Salva is scared and surrounded by danger; at that place's barely any food or water and he faces unsafe wildlife, the sweltering heat, and soldiers armed with guns. It'southward hard to imagine the fearfulness he must've felt being a child amongst strangers, separated from his family, and now in the wilderness. Years become by as he travels, settling into multiple refugee camps. Salva witnesses much death and wonders if he'll ever find his family over again.
Nya's story begins in 2008 as she and her family struggles to locate fresh water. Nya spends virtually of the day traveling dorsum and forth in the scorching oestrus to a swimming to fetch h2o for her family unit. Members of her family and others accept actually been ill from drinking contaminated h2o. Life is challenging without access to clean h2o and rather than go to school similar other children her historic period, Nya has to spend most of her days just fetching water without much time for anything else. I day, Nya learns that something skillful is finally coming to their village: a new water well.
Honestly, I don't recollect hearing about Salva's story before now. I ended upwardly reading this volume with my kids for their reading discussion group. We all loved the book, fifty-fifty though it'due south frightening and fifty-fifty hard to read in a few parts. The volume is written well, and what a page turner it is. The author did such a wonderful job weaving these two narratives together. We couldn't put it down and kept asking ourselves: What's going to happen to Salva? Is his family live? How are these stories continued? Along with the ii narratives, yous also learn about the history of Sudan, the different tribes, a scrap of culture, and their consequent struggle for make clean water. It's odd the things we humans take for granted. I honestly don't think I'll ever wait at a drinking glass of water the same once more. By the end of the story I was in tears. This book is incredibly moving with a stiff message for any historic period. It'southward truly a book I recommend to everyone.
"Stay calm when things are hard or not going right with you. Y'all volition get through it when you persevere instead of quitting. Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and promise." –Salva Dut
I don't want to spoil anything, just the extras at the terminate of the story had us doing inquiry online afterward to learn more.

This is a true to life story of Salva, an xi year old male child who found piddling to almost no place in a world where people struggle to survive an almost endless series of conflicts during the 2d Sudanese Civil War that started in 1983 .
To adults caught in a tumultuous succession of life threatening obstacles, Salva is a brunt, someone who will but slow them down, just another oral cavity to feed. *sniffs* It's unbelievable where the young boy found all that backbone and volition to live. Of the many things I've learned from him, it is to cling to hope the wisest possible way that hit me the well-nigh.
"He tried not to lose hope. At the same fourth dimension, he tried not to promise too much."
Written in a lyrical narrative only easy and timeless style of language allowing the reader to feel more, the story completely seized my heart. The brilliant, contemplative recollections of the young boy'south perilous journey by foot from Sudan to Ethiopia then later to Republic of kenya were plain told, aught very emotional. In fact, the writing mode seems to be even a bit dismissive of tragic events as if in a life-sucks-just-hurry-up-and-move-on-now approach but it still brought me to puddles of tears. It'southward an inspirational piece of literature that is definitely worth your time.
Thank you to Shanna/Darina for bringing this volume to my attention. I had no idea this e'er existed before I stalked your profile and of course, I didn't forget. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MY DEAR FRIEND! WISHING You A SPECIAL DAY, GOOD Wellness, HAPPINESS AND More than GREAT BOOKS TO READ! <iii

This brusk novel has such a big story to tell. I received a recommendation from my daughter on this one later she took the time to read it with my grandkids. I am ve Taken from a true experience, an intertwining story of 2 children, at 2 dissimilar periods in time, living in two opposite tribes, and meeting to make a deviation in their world. Both living in Sudan during times of war, despair, ravaging, starvation, death, lack of water and many more harrowing obstacles to face daily.

Book is told from two viewpoints. I is a girl walking each day to get the water her family unit needs which she carries home
Quick read good for multiple ability levels. This book should be an easy inclusion into 7th form Geography, 6th grade world history, or equally an addition to a Holocaust unit. This is how I plan to use it with my seventh form reading teacher. For younger readers, this volume may encourage a grade to adopt a project to help bring h2o to children their historic period in other places in the globe.Volume is told from two viewpoints. One is a daughter walking each day to become the h2o her family needs which she carries home in plastic gallon jugs. The trip takes her all day and while not mentioned in the story, this could be a unsafe trip for her. The second viewpoint is from a boy in the 80'south who is at school when his village is attacked. He runs into the woods and that is the final of his childhood of living with family or a village. He is in fact one of the Lost Boys.
The two stories come up together in an upbeat catastrophe meant to inspire the reader to make a ameliorate world.
Parks intended this book for children to read, then in that location is not the terror or violence that this volume could comprise. It does incorporate some difficult situations -- a boy carried off by a lion in the night, the burning of a village, etc.
I would read this book earlier handing it to a student younger than 6th form.
One more comment, because the book ends with an addendum about an elementary school putting a well in the girl's village, students may want to initiate a project like the one in the book. Be careful if yous practise this with the kids, so that your coin actually goes to putting in a well, and not in some warlord'south pocket. Rotary does projects like this -- and others of course -- and that might exist the way to get.

This book follows two main characters, Nya, a child living in Southern Sudan, who must spend every day walking to and from a swimming bringing water to her family, and Salva, who twenty-iii years earlier became a refugee when his village was attacked by soldiers from the northward. The story about Salva is the longer of the 2 and follows the eleven-year-former as he runs from his schoolhouse and must somehow cross hundreds of miles of desert, swamp, and forest to accomplish rubber. After six years in the refugee camp, Salva faces terror once again as the Ethiopian soldiers force all the Sudanese refugees back into Sudan, killing hundreds in the procedure. Merely Salva finds the strength and promise to survive and becomes a leader amid what has become known every bit the Lost Boys of the Sudan. These boys were orphans who struggled to survive on their own. Some of these boys were able to observe a mode to not just survive, but to help those left behind. Salva's story intersects with Nya'southward in an interesting way, showing that the efforts of one tin have a far-reaching effect.
While the book does explain some of the horrors that the Lost Children of the Sudan and the other refugees faced, it does non do so in a graphic mode, and the story is not about despair or violence, it's well-nigh promise, which makes the book cracking to share with students who face their own challenges.

While technically a middle grade novel, this is a story that everyone would benefit from reading. Information technology's a quick read, told as 2 alternating stories - that of a young daughter Nya in the Sudan in 2008 and a young man Salva in 1985. Both of their stories are compelling, emotional and inspirational.
Nya must walk hours each solar day to a far away well to get h2o for her family. Salva's story is heart-wrenching.

Nya must walk hours each day to a far away well to go water for her family. Salva's story is eye-wrenching. His village is attacked and he is separated from his family. Salva's journeying is fraught with loss, tragedy, unwavering hope and courage. It was unimaginable to me to call up about the horrors children confront when they are displaced from their homes, separated from their families and in refugee camps. Salva's sheer will to survive was inspirational. I don't know how I'd cope in such a situation.
I loved how these two seemingly unconnected stories intertwined in the stop. What the book lacks in pages information technology makes up for in bear on. It is impossible non to feel empathy for the characters within these pages and exist moved past their stories. This is one book I highly recommend reading & discussing with all the important children in your life.

Things get a bid muddled though, when you flash-frontward to Nya, a young African girl who is afterward connected to Salva in a weird ending. Nya has a skillful story herself, but it interrupts the main story structure, and Salvo's character falls flat in the eye, leaving some parts of the story, like of his family unit for instance, with loose ends, while other parts seem unrealistic. This could be befuddling for inquisitive kids (similar my niece who wanted to know: "only what happened to his mommy?").
Great book for a kid who is just learning about the impact of atrocities that children their age face around the globe. The story of a Salva is a moving i.

I was looking for a kid book on the environment and knew children's book author Linda Sue Park had (in 2002) won an award for A Single Shard, and though I knew aught nigh this book (rated more 48K on Goodreads, yay!) I listened to it in a little over two hours. For a book this short it probably crams too much information for center grades kids to hands digest, only they tin do classroom (or domicile!) research on it, too. There are two parallel stories, both of them based on extensive interviews and research, i of a male child Salva Dut, one of the Lost Boys from the second Sudanese Ceremonious War in 1985, and a girl, Nya, in 2008. We get a pretty fast version of the growing upward story of Salva, who is separated grade his family, lives for years in refugee camps and is lucky to be chosen to come up to the US to live. Nya has to walk ii times a mean solar day many miles to become water for her family unit, as resources are quickly (and literally) evaporating (as with many places on the planet).
It'due south a powerful story about war, water, refugees, a genocide, courage, and a little flake of hope. Salva speaks in the end virtually a Sudanese projection he sets up involving wells that kids/families could get involved in. That Salva and Nya'south stories link in the terminate is a cool thing here. Terrible, horrific things happened and yet happen in Sudan, merely it's an of import story to hear most, told merely and as a model from Park about socially committed research that young people and adults can accept a deeper dive into.

I tin can't connect to this story at all. I simply can't. These type of "true" stories are just too rare, but in the end, it might exist common to some people. At times, in the commencement of Salva's journeying, I felt a slight disconnect: I did not feel that his forced exile from his village or even the loss of his new friend are scenes that moved me emotionally. As I kept reading, my mind and my heart mingled: the words that are affair-of-facts also became matter-of-heart and matter-of-wisdom. The portion of the journey involving Salva's uncle, his guidance, and his death, is the center piece of the tale. I fifty-fifty experience that I've learned a precious lesson from his mantra of taking one step at a fourth dimension, solving one problem at a fourth dimension -- to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles or to achieve seemingly impossible goals.
It is a powerful volume because Park manages to tell a harrowing tale to a young audition that will surely stimulate empathy and activism.

Information technology made me wonder how non knowing things, can hurt. It made me realize how I'chiliad likewise lazy to get from my room to the fridge to go h2o, while half mode across the earth in Sudan, a country adjacent to Ethiopia that ended a civil war non too long ago, in that location is someone(Nya) walking hours just to get muddy water. Not only just to get water. Going to the nearest schoolhouse and medic takes hours also. Just like Nya explains, h2o tin can be the fundamental to life. Information technology can bring happiness to families. Peacefulness. Pedagogy.
Now talking most Salva and his family, he meets his father in 19 years! In nineteen years, someone can modify so much to forget their son'southward face. I wonder when Salva met his mother and his brother. Now thinking about information technology, the war has as well changed Salva in many means. First and the nearly obvious, he was stronger after the words uncle told him. "But ane more step" "Just till the bushes over there". This and his friends decease kept him going to his destination. Adjacent, the state of war made Salva run abroad and not fight for the war. This made him become to america since he didn't fight. He too didn't get the scar on his forehead because he ran away from the war. Finally, the war shaped Salva to who he is today. Going to southern Sudan and helping people there. Even generous to confront the Nuer and dig a well for them.
Anyways, I recommend this book to anyone. From elementary to adults. Everyone should read this book. ...more than

"A Long Walk to Water" has two parallel story lines. The first, which starts in 1985, focuses on Salva, who becomes one of the Lost Boys of Sudan when his village is attacked in the middle of the school day and he must flee for safety -- a heartbreaking journey which takes years and spans countries and continents.
The 2nd story line starts in 2008 and focuses on Nya, a Sudanese daughter whose sole activity in life is to walk miles to and from a watering hole each mean solar day to collect dingy h2o (the only available kind) for her family unit.
The book is written for middle grade readers, so adults may find it defective in depth and predictable. However, I call up it hits the sweetness spot for its intended audience. Middle grade readers will notice suspense, action, and a sense of empathy for the characters in both of the story lines. My daughter was compelled to find out more about both the Lost Boys as well as access to clean water -- and I doubt she is alone. The book has given usa an opportunity to discuss not only history and geography, but also better helps her understand the current Syrian refugee crunch. I highly recommend this for eye grade readers.

The volume also shows how evolution might ease cultural tensions in Sudan as a whole. Salva Dut, who initiates an influential projection to build wells in Sudan, makes a betoken of designing wells for many different tribes, not just his own Dinka tribe. In this way, Salva makes sure that the different cultural and ethnic groups in Due south Sudan reap the rewards of evolution equally. Furthermore, the author suggests that many of the rivalries betwixt tribes stem from disputes over admission to h2o, meaning that providing clean h2o for the unlike tribes will make South Sudan more than a more peaceful place for its inhabitants.
I tin brand a text-to-world connection the South Sudanese refugee crunch and the state of affairs Salva and Nya is in. Final week, I participated in SHASMUN Seven as the delegate of Due south Africa. This debate further enhanced my learning on the background history and the current situation inn Due south Sudan. Furthermore, this feel relates to the political video nosotros watched in class because the verbal same thing happened in the conference. In the video, USA vetoed the resolution past the United nations of aborting weapon transportation to South Sudan, which could possibly relieve thousands of lives. At the conference, Congo and Kenya submitted a clause on the s of weapon transportation, only the delegate of U.s., pertaining to his country stance, vetoed information technology by hit the clause.

Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope....Salva Dut (2010)A Long Walk to H2o by Linda Sue Park brought tears to my eyes. I take always wanted to read this true story of Salva Dut, a young boy who flees his school and village during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983), when armed men get in and beginning burning the village and shooting the villagers. Salva'south trek across Southern Sudan to Ethiopia's and then Kenya'south refugee camps is an emotional and inspirational read in a Young Adult format. Salva is forced to experience terrible circumstances as a young child including separation from his family, witnessing many deaths of friends, family and companions, a harrowing walk beyond two countries and grueling living circumstances. Salva tackles his problems flake by bit, one day at a fourth dimension, and information technology is this attitude, some luck and his delivery to being open to learning new things that helps him through life.
A parallel story is told of Nya, a young daughter, who has to spend each 24-hour interval walking twice to a pond for water. Each trip takes about four hours. We acquire a chip about her living circumstances and family, and how having to walk and so far each day for h2o impacts everything from personal health to the ability of children to nourish school.
When Salva returns abode to Sudan as a young man, things come full circle and he is able to (over time) assist more than 500,000 people accept access to clean h2o, having an affect that resounds throughout the communities he helps.
At 120 pages, this quick read is sure to inspire hope that despite the worst attempts of humanity to keep others down due to political, religious and property rights wars, at that place will ever ascend those humans who transcend their circumstances and can bring light, promise, relief to others in desperate demand. Highly recommended for anyone interested in social disinterestedness, inspirational reading, globe literature.
